Ever rising water pollution is having a blocking action on the thyroid function and proving to be increasingly goitrogenic. This is the major cause of rising thyroid dysfunction and subsequent thyroid disease. It affects mainly the women folk, exaggerated by the burden of hormonal imbalance, pregnancy and poor diet. Alarming is the fact that thyroid disease seems to be rising faster than diabetes and cardiac problems, though the focus is on the latter two, in our country. This fact is complicated by the lack of specialized doctors and dedicated centers to manage thyroid centers to manage thyroid patients.

Very often thyroid patients are unable to get specialized care, considering this to be a minor syndrome. Lot of patients are put on simple replacement therapy with thyroxine, by their family physicians, ignoring the vast psychological and other systematic problems occurring during the course of this syndrome. Frequent infections, skin problems, joint pains, psychological imbalance, mental depression, negative and focused thought perception, increased irritability and dissociation of the mind and body are the few important components of the thyroid syndrome, which often go undiagnosed. These problems have an extreme psychological bearing and may persist even after blood profiles show normally. All these require targeted treatment under specialized supervision. Surprisingly a large percentage of cases of martial discord, during the initial years of marriage occur because of a primary thyroid disease, manifesting in the female partner, soon after attaining motherhood. These can be prevented if proper medical care is administered in good time.

Thyroid disease is also affecting more and more men folk as well, associated with diabetes in all most forty percent of the cases. Management of thyroid disease requires specialized care for long time intervals, maybe even for life, with regular follow-ups, for men and women alike. Replacement therapy with thyroxine alone is not enough and additional supportive medicinal supplements are essential to control the whole disease syndrome.
